Aim of the project is the analysis of existing governance approaches for agro-ecosystem management in rural landscapes. The analysis is framed in the theory of institutional fit, posing the question, if the existing governance approaches are temporally and spatially designed in such a way that ecosystem services and biodiversity in agricultural landscapes can be optimally provided to society. Thereby, the focus is on collaborative governance approaches, which involve actors from all spheres of society (state, market, and civil society). The analysis is based on empirical work in several European case studies. A focus lies on case studies with designated protection areas.
The project is structured into five work packages: Works package 1 (project management) is in charge of the overall coordination of the project. Work package 2 (governance models) is identifies, describes and analyzes collaborative governance approaches and links them to agro-ecosystem management. In particular, their suitability for providing a good institutional fit is investigated. To do so, it is analyzed in how far their spatial and temporal scales are aligned to reaching specific ecosystem service and biodiversity targets. Work package 3 (Production practices) identifies, describes and analyzes currently applied production alternatives in agro-ecosystem management. In cooperation with work package 4 (ecosystem services) a matrix is developed, which shows which ecosystem services are provided, but also which are needed to ensure that the different agro-ecosystems stay functional. Work package 5 (governance recommendations) finally derived target-group-oriented recommendations for different governance actors.
The knowledge gained in the project is disseminated to the target groups via different communication channels. Addressed target groups are: a) stakeholders in the case studies at the local and regional level, b) policy decision makers at the national and EU level, c) the international scientific community, and d) the general public. Project results are presented in the following formats: i) project website, ii) target-group-specific materials in writing, as audios, or videos, iii) scientific publications, and iv) organized events, such as local/regional stakeholder workshops, national expert workshops, or a thematic session at an international conference.
BMBF3 cp3

2017 Landnutzungskonflikte und Governance

Organisation for International Dialogue and Conflict Management, Austria

WUR - Wageningen University

BMBF: ERA-NET
