Das Project kombiniert Forschung und Lehre zu einem Bündel von Methoden, die für eine Nachhaltigkeitsbewertung in den Bereichen Forstwirtschaft und Bioenergie in Europa angewendet werden. Das Projekt möchte Methoden entsprechend dem neuesten Stand der Technik entwickeln, die in Fragen zur Nachhaltigkeit in Industrie-, Landnutzungs- und Regionalplanung angewendet werden können. CASTLE wird ein Konzept zur Ausbildung des wissenschaftlichen Nachwuchses zu einem weiten Bereich von Methoden und Fähigkeiten zur Nachhaltigkeitsbewertung erarbeiten, die ihnen exzellente Kompetenzen für ihre zukünftigen Karrieren in Industrie, beim Beratungsgeschäft und bei politischen Entscheidungsprozessen eröffnen. In 14 einzelnen wissenschaftlichen Studien werden spezifische Methoden und Arbeitsweisen vorwiegend in Kooperation mit privatwirtschaftlichen Akteuren detaillierter bearbeitet.<br>CASTLE hat folgend wissenschaftliche und technische Ziele&#58; 1. Entwicklung von innovativen Methoden zur Nachhaltigkeitsbewertung, die auf aktuelle Fragen beim Landnutzungsmanagement sowie bei politischen Entscheidungsprozessen angewendet werden können. 2. Anwendung von Verfahren zu Nachhaltigkeitsbewertung, Szenario-Analysen, Kohlenstoffbilanzierung, Product Carbon Footprint und ähnlichen Methoden auf Fallbeispiele im Bereich Forstwirtschaft und Bio-Energie in Europa und anderswo, 3. Verknüpfung dieser Verfahren, um die Konsistenz auf verschiedenen Skalen der Nachhaltigkeitsbewertung zu gewährleisten, 4. Unterstützung der Entwicklung nachhaltigen unternehmerischen Handelns in wissensbasierter Biowirtschaft durch Verteilung der CASTLE-Methoden und Instrumente der Nachhaltigkeitsbewertung.<br>Innerhalb dieses Projektes werden am ZALF zwei wissenschaftliche Studien bearbeitet&#58;<br><span style="text-decoration&#58;underline;">Ex-ante Nachhaltigkeitsbewertung für die Biomasseproduktion von Agrarsystemen&#58;</span> Methoden und Werkzeuge zur Folgenabschätzung sind oft entweder quantitativ, z. B. durch umfangreiche Modellierungen und Datenanalysen, oder qualitativer Art einschließlich Partizipation und Einbeziehung von Stakeholdern. Diese Studie soll die Integration von quantitativen und qualitativen Methoden der Ex-ante Folgenabschätzung von Szenarien zur Biomasseproduktion verbessern. Die Folgenabschätzung soll auf der Landschaftsskala ausgeführt werden und multiple Funktionen und Dienstleistungen an der Schnittstelle Landwirtschaft-Forstwirtschaft berücksichtigen. Das partizipatorische Tool FoPIA (Framework for Participatory Impact Assessment), das verschiedene Landnutzungssektoren und Nachhaltigkeitsfragen abdeckt, soll mit Verfahren Bayes‘scher Netze kombiniert werden, um Wahrscheinlichkeitsbetrachtungen bei der Bewertung von umweltbezogenen und sozio-ökonomischen Auswirkungen alternativer Produktionsoptionen zu ermöglichen und trade-offs zur Entscheidungsfindung ableiten zu können.<br><span style="text-decoration&#58;underline;">Optionen zur CO<sub>2</sub>-Mitigation durch innovative Nutzung von Holzprodukten&#58;</span> Der Einfluss von Klimaänderungen auf den Kohlenstoffhaushalt von Wäldern kann durch Anwendung dynamischer Simulationsmodelle bewertet werden. Biome-BGC simuliert die wesentlichen Indikatoren der Kohlenstoffbilanz (GPP, NPP, NEP, NBP), berücksichtigt jedoch noch nicht die Lebensdauer von Holzprodukten und den sich daraus ergebenden net sector exchange (NSE). Kohlenstoffspeicherung in Holzprodukten weist als Komponente der globalen C-Bilanz ein signifikantes CO<sub>2</sub>-Mitigationspotential auf.<br>Ziel dieser Studie ist die Bewertung der Mitigations-Effekte der Nutzungsoptionen von Holzprodukten ausgewählter Europäischer Wälder unter verschiedenen Management- und Klimaänderungsszenarien mit dem Modell Biome-BGC, gekoppelt mit einem geeigneten Holzproduktemodell.</div> <div class="ExternalClass616CA2E62FBF4E579873BA7E688F8FD6">CASTLE is a European research and training ­network for early stage researchers (Marie-Curie ITN). The project will combine research and training on a suit of methods used for sustainability assessments in the forest-based and bioenergy sectors in Europe. CASTLE will elaborate an overall training schedule on sustainability assessment methods to train the early stage researchers in a broad range of methods and skills that will offer them excellent competences for their future careers in the industry, consultancy business or policy making. 14 individual research studies will in addition develop specific methods and practices in more detail, mostly in cooperation with private sector actors.<br>CASTLE has the following scientific and technical objectives&#58; I. to innovate sustainability impact assessment methods that can be applied to current sustainability challenges in society and business, for land use management and regional policy making, II. to apply sustainability impact assessment, scenario analyses, carbon accounting, product footprint, and other related methods to cases in the forest-based and bio-energy sectors in Europe and elsewhere, III. to cross-link these approaches to ensure consistency at different scales of sustainability assessment, IV. to support the development of sustainable business activities in the knowledge-based bio-economy by widely disseminating the CASTLE methods and tools for sustainability assessment.<br>Within this projects two research studies are hosted at ZALF&#58;<br><span style="text-decoration&#58;underline;">Ex-ante Impact Assessment system for biomass production from arable land&#58;</span> Methods and tools for impact assessment are often either quantitative making use of comprehensive modeling and data analysis or qualitative also involving participation and stakeholder involvement. This study will improve the integration of quantitative and qualitative methods for ex-ante IA of biomass production scenarios. The impact assessment will be conducted at landscape level to consider the multiple function and services at the agriculture-forestry interface. The participatory tool FoPIA (Framework for Participatory Impact Assessment) that covers various land use sectors and sustainability issues will be combined with a Bayesian network approach to allow for probability considerations in the assessment of the environmental and socio-economic impacts of alternative production options at landscape level and to derive trade-offs for decision making.<br><span style="text-decoration&#58;underline;">Mitigation options through innovative wood product use&#58;</span> The impact of climate change on the carbon budget of forests can be assessed by applying dynamic simulation models. The BIOME-BGC model simulates the main indicators of carbon balance (GPP, NPP, NEP, NBP), but does not yet consider the life time of wood products and the resulting net sector exchange (NSE).
