Synergies through emerging technologies

Digitalization and new technologies have a profound impact on the development of agriculture. They create innovative, site-adapted farming practices that combine food production with the protection and conservation of biodiversity and ecosystem services, such as clean water and fertile soils.

What do we want to achieve with our research?

We want to ...

... use resources only where they are needed. Agricultural land is characterized by a high degree of diversity and must be farmed using highly efficient and site-adapted cultivation methods.

... preserve and expand diverse ecosystem services and biodiversity in and around agricultural land through the use of digitalization and new technologies. By combining information, we can ideally match the societal needs with the landscape services.

... scientifically accompany the transformation of agriculture and to develop solutions together with all target groups, in particular regarding: new business and cooperation models, markets, forms of governance and jobs with changing tasks.

... develop the digital cultivation systems of the future, which are less sensitive to the effects of climate change, emit fewer greenhouse gases and are ideally adapted to the respective sites.

What are the key challenges to be solved?

Challenge: How do we use digitalization and new technologies to develop incentive systems that protect biodiversity and reward ecosystem services?

Our solution: We use Big Data, case studies, workshops as well as new information and communication technologies to create a knowledge base for efficient and economically viable solutions and test these in practice.

Challenge: How do we integrate digitalization and new technologies into the development and optimization of sustainable land use systems?

Our solution: We use sensors to record site and plant conditions in real time, to model relevant cause-effect relationships and – based on these – to derive options for action for climate-adapted and environmentally compatible cultivation.

Challenge: How can cultivation sytems and measures respond more flexibly tot he effects of climate change, market fluctations and changes in social demands?

Our solution: We are developing self-learning systems that simulate the diverse demands placed on agriculture. We condense data from the landscape, environment, weather, market and society to provide knowledge-based solutions.

Challenge: How do we combine the high demands placed on the protection of farm-related data with the cross-farm networking required for the further development of sustainable land use systems?

Our solution: We are actively involved in the development of a national Agricultural Master Platform that securely stores and links farm data with public data and makes it available.
