What do I need to think about before I leave?

• Give notice of your apartment in good time. Make an appointment to hand over the apartment.
• Deregister your residential address at the responsible registration office. You can deregister residential address not earlier than 7 days before departure.
• Don't forget to cancel private contracts (mobile phone, Netflix, etc.).
• If necessary, cancel your health insurance.
• You need to close your bank account.
• Return laptops and office keys to ZALF. To do this, contact your secretariat.

How do I cancel my health insurance?

• The state health insurance doesn’t end automatically when your contract of employment ends!
• The state health insurance doesn’t end automatically when you leave Germany!
• In any case, you must terminate a state health insurance policy in writing. A termination should be made 4 weeks before your departure from Germany and at the latest up to the day of your departure.
• EA private health insurance for scholarship holders is usually limited and doesn’t have to be terminated.

How do I close my bank account?

• A bank account must always be closed at your bank in person. Please arrange an appointment with your bank in good time before departure. Don't forget to cancel debit cards and credit cards too.
