PHD-Day am ZALF

On July 11, 2016, scientists from all over Brandenburg and Berlin presented their research results at the “Long Night of Science” to thousands of visitors. The Institute of Land Use Systems had prepared something special. In the house of the Leibniz Association guests were invited to join hands-on experiments in order to answer the question: Why soya beans and lupines are considered to be fertilizer factories of nature? Due to their symbiosis with special soil bacteria and the ability to nitrogen fixation, they supply themselves with nitrogen and help to raise the plant yield of following crops. Furthermore, they are healthy protein supplier as well which was proven by the Leibniz Institute of of Vegetable and Ornamental Crops at the neighbouring both. Visitors had the opportunity to taste freshly-baked bread made of lupines there. Also Prof. Matthias Kleiner, President of the Leibniz Association, visited the ZALF booth and gained and insight into the research activities of the Institute of Land Use Systems. All in all, it has been a very informative and successful “Long Night of Science” 2016.
