TROPENTAG 2023, the annual international conference on tropical and subtropical agriculture, will be held on September 20-22, 2023, at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Germany. This year's TROPENTAG is organized by the Leibniz Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research (ZALF) in collaboration with the Humboldt-Universität Berlin. Journalists are cordially invited to attend.

This year's theme, "Competing Pathways for Equitable Food Systems Transformation: Trade-offs and Synergies" addresses the urgent need for food systems transformation in the face of the growing challenges of our time. Journalists are welcome to attend. Scientists will be available for interviews. The Federal Minister of Agriculture, Cem Özdemir, will give a welcome address. If you are interested, please contact public.relations@zalf.de. In addition, registration for online participation is still possible.

The COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, increased conflict as well as growing social and income inequality have highlighted the weaknesses of our current food systems," says PD Dr. Stefan Sieber, a scientist at ZALF and co-chair of this year's TROPENTAG. These factors have led to a decline in global crop and food diversity and a more fragile environment, which in turn affects human nutrition and health. In addition, rising food and fuel prices have made healthy diets increasingly unaffordable, especially for marginalized populations. "It is clear that a comprehensive and equitable transformation of food systems is critical, but the debate on approaches and solutions is still ongoing. This is where TROPENTAG can contribute", says Prof. Dr. Dagmar Mithöfer, Professor of Agrifood Chain Management at Humboldt-Universität and co-chair of this year’s TROPENTAG.

Platform for exchanging ideas on sustainable food systems

TROPENTAG 2023 serves as a platform to foster a lively debates and exchange diverse perspectives, drawing on interdisciplinary expertise and methodologies. The conference will feature invited international guest speakers followed by keynote presentations in parallel thematic sessions. These sessions will cover a wide range of research areas, exploring barriers to sustainable resource management at the biological, technical, social, economic and political levels, as well as strategies to overcome them.
