EMAS-Audit

ZALF attaches great importance to environmental protection. In its own environmental policy, the Research Centre now describes the path towards more sustainable use of available natural resources.

From now on, all ZALF sites will be continuously reviewed with regard to sustainability aspects and improvements will be implemented jointly with employees. The objectives include the active protection and promotion of biological diversity on the company premises and the ZALF test sites, the expansion of the share of renewable energies in electricity and heat generation and the reduction of waste, water consumption, the use of hazardous substances and traffic-related emissions. On its way to becoming a climate-neutral research institution, ZALF relies on the active involvement of all employees.

Together, they should continuously improve and integrate an active environmental management system into their daily work beyond the requirements of environmental law. Regular environmental audits are carried out in accordance with the European EMAS Regulation. The first audit is currently being prepared and should be completed following an inspection in April 2020.
"ZALF employees are the key element," explains Michael Berg-Mohnicke, ZALF's environmental officer. "The EMAS certification we are striving for is only the external impetus for more sustainability in our everyday work. EMAS is for us only an external impulse for an inner change, which we now want to implement together".
