With the support from Prof. Heidi Webber and Dr. Wurb Angelika, Dr. Chenzhi Wang, a member of the CSA Group of Research Area 3: Agricultural Landscape Systems, has been awarded the prestigious Marie Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship. This distinguished accolade is part of the 2024 Marie Curie Actions (MSCA), an initiative of the European Commission aimed at promoting research and innovation across Europe and the world.
Dr. Wang is among 1,249 recipients selected from a competitive pool of 8,039 applicants. His project entitled "Advancing Integrated Risk Assessments of Cropping Systems in Sub-Saharan Africa (iRACS)," aims to combine agronomic, environmental and economic knowledge to improve agricultural risk assessments in a Sub-Saharan context. This new insightful proposal also helps Dr. Wang as the first ZALF recipient of this esteemed EU project.
The iRACS project will greatly improve current capacities to assess the economic impacts of agricultural risks in Sub-Saharan Africa. By developing a new biotic stress module and integrating it with mechanistic crop models, Dr. Wang plans to assess the effects of multiple agricultural stressors on cropping systems. Additionally, in collaboration with the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) and its Integrated Biosphere Futures Research Group (IBF), the GLOBIOM integrated assessment model will be applied to examine the broader economic implications of these impacts.
This project foresees close collaboration with the on-going COINS and iCSA projects within the CSA Group. Notable contributions from team members including Dr. Yean Kim and Dr. Diancoumba Madina have been instrumental in securing funding for this innovative research.
The Marie Curie Fellowship is one of the most competitive and esteemed funding programs globally, with a selectivity rate of 10.2% in the field of environment and earth sciences for this cycle. The grant emphasizes the European Commission's commitment to supporting essential research that tackles global challenges.
ZALF and its community are very proud of Dr. Wang’s accomplishments and are excited to support his ongoing contributions to science and our understanding of agricultural landscapes.
