The PREPSOIL kick-off meeting will be held in Aarhus, Denmark on September 14 and 15, 2022.

The European project PREPSOIL will help improve the knowledge base and awareness of soil health in the European Union. It is estimated that 60-70% of European soils are degraded. Lack of knowledge and awareness are the main reasons for soil degradation. In the EU mission ‘A Soil Deal for Europe, awareness and knowledge of soil health is seen as a key concept for soil improvement. The EU mission proposes a novel approach to impact-oriented research and development based on open science and strong stakeholder and citizen involvement.

PREPSOIL will create permanent structures in living labs in collaboration with stakeholders to jointly develop locally adapted and economically viable solutions for management practices that maintain soil health. ZALF researchers Keerthi Bandru, Lukas Bayer and Katharina Helming (Impact Assessment Research Group) will conduct an EU-wide synthesis of soil health needs and develop regional strategies for the science-policy interface for sustainable soil management.

The PREPSOIL project can build upon results of the ‘Soil Mission Support’  (www.soilmissionsupport.eu) project, which is scientifically coordinated by ZALF. The final conference for ‘Soil Mission Support’ will be held in Brussels on September 27.
