Mid-term evaluation of the virtual BonaRes centre for soil research
An international expert panel conducted the mid-term evaluation of the BonaRes Centre for Soil Research on 3-4 December in an online format. The abbreviation BonaRes stands for "Soil as a sustainable resource for the bio-economy". In view of the massively increasing demands on the performance of our soils - not only for the production of food and bioenergy, but also for climate mitigation and adaptation as well as for the delivery of ecosystem services and biodiversity - the BMBF has been funding the project since 2015. The Centre supports and integrates the research of ten national collaborative projects of the BonaRes Programme for research into sustainable agricultural soil management practices. The Centre's products include a national repository for the publication of soil research data, simulation models for soil functions, tools for the sustainability assessment of soil management, and a web portal (www.bonares.de) as a central hub for communication within the soil sciences and with users from practice, politics and civil society. The centre operates as a merger of the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research - UFZ (coordination), the Leibniz Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research (ZALF), the Technical University of Munich, the University of Giessen, the Senckenberg Society for Natural Research (SGN) and the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR). In case of a successful evaluation, the BMBF will propose a further three-year funding period for the centre, which will focus on the validation and perpetuation of the products and infrastructures developed.
