An international group of experts has positively evaluated the BonaRes Centre. BonaRes stands for “soil as a sustainable resource for bioeconomy”.

It is an initiative of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) under the "National Research Strategy BioEconomy 2030". BonaRes is motivated by the need to safeguard essential functions of soil while maintaining and even increasing the productivity („fertility“) of soils for biomass production. BonaRes consists of 10 collaborative research projects involving more than 40 German research institutions plus the BonaRes Centre, which was established in 2015 and which supports the scientific integration of the collaborative research projects, implements a repository for research data, conducts modelling, assessment and governance research and makes all information available in a web-portal. The BonaRes Centre is coordinated by the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) in cooperation with the Leibniz Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research (ZALF), the Technical University München, the Senckenberg Museum Görlitz, the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources. The international evaluation board acknowledged the seamless cooperation between the involved parties that made it a successful, virtual Soil Centre, which is well prepared for the ambitious endeavours to provide the scientific evidence base for sustainable soil management.
