Overview on successful “Future Soil Management” workshops by ZALF “Foresight Team”
On 16th and 18th of February, two online scenario workshops with the title “Future Soil Management” took place. The "Foresight Team" of the Leibniz-Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research (ZALF) e.V. invited in the context of the research program "BonaRes - Soil as a sustainable resource for the bioeconomy".
Each day 18 participants from agricultural associations (DBV, DLG, ABL, KTBL), civil societies (NABU, WWF, GIZ, LWK, VLK, Germanwatch, GFA), industry (John Deere, CLAAS, Bayer), and policy-makers (BLE, BMU, BZL, UBA, BGR, MLR, LLG) had one afternoon to validate and discuss to discuss five scenarios (also called development paths) for future land use until 2050 in four categories such as economy, policy, technology and environment. The five scenarios that were negotiated as narratives for the possible land management of the future are: Sustainable Path, Slow Change Path, High Tech Path, National Path, and Divided Path. The first two scenario element categories (i.e. Economy and Policy) were based on the “Shared Socio-economic Pathways for European agriculture and food systems (Eur-Agri-SSPs)” by Mitter et al. (2020), whereas two last scenario element categories (i.e. Technology and Environment) were developed further in details by ZALF “Foresight Team” and adjusted to soil management at the national German level.
