The 25th Tropentag Conference took place in Berlin from September 20-22. With a total of more than 1,000 participants online and on-site from over 80 countries, it was the largest Tropentag conference since the first Tropentag in 1999. In his opening remarks, Germany's Minister of Agriculture and Food, Cem Özdemir, emphasized the role of global partnerships and women's empowerment in achieving a world without hunger. This year's Tropics Day was jointly organized by Humboldt Universität zu Berlin and the Leibniz Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research (ZALF).
This year's main theme was the equitable transformation of food systems. Six keynote speakers addressed aspects of the theme in their presentations, ranging from agroecology to inclusive value chains, food security and climate change, animal husbandry and resilience of food systems. Johan Swinnen of the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), which was featured this year as a member of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), delivered a keynote address.
In addition to an extensive program of oral and poster presentations, more than 30 workshops were offered before and after the conference. A special highlight was the conference dinner in the Dinosaur Hall of the Berlin Museum of Natural History. A team of about 20 ZALF staff members was involved in the organization and implementation of Tropentag 2023.
