Lange Nacht der Wissenschaften 2024

The Leibniz Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research (ZALF) took part in the "Lange Nacht der Wissenschaften 2024" (Long Night of Sciences) in Berlin on June 22nd and presented four exciting research projects on sustainable agriculture. 1000 interested guest visited the both at the House of the Leibniz Association.

The event started on Saturday, June 22, 2024 at 17:00 and offered all interested people the opportunity to experience science at different locations in Berlin. The ZALF event took place at the headquarters of the Leibniz Association at Chausseestrasse 111 in Berlin-Mitte.

ZALF offers:

The joint project Land-Innovation Lausitz (LIL) presented a vivid landscape model. Under the motto "Land-Innovation-Lausitz: After coal - into the future with wild plants, agroforestry, truffles & co.", the information booth showed how the dry and sandy landscape of the former open-cast mining region can be used sustainably for agriculture in the future and which ideas from the field of bioeconomy can put the Lusatian economy on a new footing.

The hands-on booth of the Citizen Science project "Mückenatlas - Germany collects mosquitoes" offered hands-on science: Visitors learned how to identify different mosquito species, such as the ringed snake, the bush mosquito or the tiger mosquito. Everyone was welcomed to bring their own mosquitoes to be identified under the microscope.

The sciencetainment booth of the patchCROP and DigifarmingLab project offered an interactive experience with field robots and agricultural machinery in a computer simulation under the motto "patchCROP - because diversity counts", which shows what future agriculture could look like. Visitors can playfully experience how field robots can help reduce pesticide use and improve biodiversity and soil health in the field.

The SynAgriPV project also focused on sciencetainment: in a virtual demonstrator, the team uses a computer game to show the possibilities of combining agriculture and energy production on the same land using agrivoltaics: an opportunity to reduce the increasing conflicts of interest over the scarce resource of land.
