On the subject of "Utilizing protein plants successfully", a technical discussion and field day with more than 30 participants from practice and research took place at ZALF on 19th June.

Dr. Ing. Ruge-Wehling of JKI spoke about the development of innovative breeding strategies in order to increase the cultivation importance of lupins, eg. the development of selection markers (identification of resistance to anthracnose) for lupine breeding.

After professional discussion and debate participants visited the demonstration trial "Lupine varieties", where it became clear that, compared with narrow-leaved (L. angustifolius) and white lupine (L. albus) the yellow lupine (L. luteus) gets along best with the extremely dry conditions on-site. In addition to the yellow lupine, seven varieties of white lupine and one variety of narrow-leaved lupine are cultivated. In further demonstration attempts, various variants of weed regulation in white lupine and the cultivation suitability of soya were seen compared to lupine. In the latter case, the effects of the preceding crop (lupine/soya) on the yield of the following fruit (oats) could be demonstrated. Furthermore, a winter wheat variety trial with ten old and two new varieties at two levels of fertilization and an attempt at weed control in organic winter wheat cultivation were presented.
