A new research project kick-off meeting titled “Resources management in the salinized and drought stress-endangered irrigation areas of Central Asia for adapting to climate change (BioWat)” was held in Tashkent Institute of Irrigation and Agricultural Mechanization Engineers (TIIAME) during 4–5 December 2017. This new research project is in line with Uzbekistan President’s Decree No.2909 “On measures for the further development of the higher education system” adopted on 20 April 2017 as well as the Decree No.303 “On measures to radically improve the quality of new professional cadres in the area of agriculture and water resources” adopted on 24 May 2017.

The main aim of the project is to develop a model concept for the sustainable re-use of drainage water in the irrigated areas of Central Asia as well as provide scientific recommendations based on empirical research. It is financed by the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), and coordinated by the Leibniz Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research (ZALF) at Müncheberg. In addition, the project partners include the University of Kassel (Germany), U.M. Ahmedsafin Institute of Hydrogeology and Geoecology (Kazakhstan), Institute of Botany, Plant Physiology and Genetic, Academy of Science of the Republic of Tajikistan, as well as the International Water Management Institute (IWMI)-Central Asia office. The project will support TIIAME scientists and PhD students to conduct research on potential re-use of drainage water in irrigated agriculture in Uzbekistan.
