The Leibniz Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research (ZALF) is a project partner in agri:lab X4, which aims to investigate and specifically address socio-ecological challenges and transformation fields in three different landscape types of Lower Saxony (intensively used peatlands, extensively used peatlands, and intensively used agricultural landscapes).<br>Research collaboration takes place at two levels: i) At the local (niche) level, “landscape labs” are established to develop prototypes/innovations and new land use approaches for the three landscape types together with local actors in co-design processes, and to accompany their testing. A central focus of accompanying the transformation process lies on regional and social learning processes, to understand how regional transformation competencies and capacities can be strengthened and socio-ecological resilience created.ii) At the landscape level, regional, overarching negotiation and balancing processes are initiated and researched to develop an integrated transformation strategy, deriving general principles of a landscape transformation strategy.<br>In this way, agri:lab X4 combines two research modes: On the one hand, transformative research ("Mode 2 – Science with Society", co-design of sustainability-oriented landscape interventions), and on the other hand, transformation research ("Mode 1 – Normal Science": disciplinary research on socio-ecological transformation processes).
