EURHO conference

Astrid Artner-Nehls represented ZALF at the sixth Conference of the European Rural History Organisation with a presentation on her work in the BMBF junior research group BioKum, which is investigating the potential of livestock manure as a resource for the bioeconomy. The four-day conference took place from 11 to 14 September 2023 at Babeș-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca (Romania). The programme was broad in topics and time span, ranging from rural finance in the 14th century to the agri-food change in the 21st century.

In the panel "Rethinking innovation, technological changes, and global agricultural knowledge circulations in the 20th century" Astrid Artner-Nehls presented the results of a text mining analysis of the reporting of livestock manure in German leading media and agricultural journals. She showed which discourses and representations of manure appear in the respective media genres, identified fields of tension between agriculture and the public, and possible points of connection. Together with her colleague Bruno Esperante (photo) from the University of Madrid, who chaired the panel, she is planning a research collaboration to comparatively study discourses and manure practices in Galicia (Spain) and Brandenburg (Germany).
