Although a basic food provision for Berlin with regional products is possible, a large part of the food for Berlin is produced far away and then imported.​

​The effects of these supply structures, unused potentials and alternatives for a regional supply are discussed by José Luis Vicente-Vicente and Beatrice Walthall in a recent online article of the National Geographic. 

​Conclusion: A food system transformation is necessary, but complex.
