The German Research Foundation (DFG) brought together an interdisciplinary group of scientists from Germany and Central Asia to discuss current research developments in the area of soil health in Central Asia. The event took place during 3–5 March 2026 in Uzbekistan.
The main aim of the workshop, entitled “Promoting Vibrant Agroecosystems in Central Asia – A One Health Approach to Organic Contaminants”, was to identify potential research ideas for future DFG applications. The workshop attendees included 12 renowned scientists from Germany and 12 renowned scientists from Central Asia. The Vice-President of the DFG (Prof. Karin Jacobs) and other DFG members also attended the event. The scientific focus was on the application of pesticides in agriculture and its impact on soil health and the quality of irrigation water. From IMA, Ahmad Hamidov attended and discussed the idea of researching the impact of implementing innovative technologies on soil health in the region.
As part of the workshop, the participants visited Urgench State University in the Khorezm region, close to the Aral Sea, to participate in scientific sessions and visit the university’s soil laboratories. The university benefitted from the ZEF/BMBF/UNESCO “Land and Water Use Restructuring in Uzbekistan/Khorezm” project. During the stay, the delegation also had the opportunity to visit: (a) fruit and vegetable farms to understand about soil health-related challenges, and (b) a “school for irrigators” to learn about modern irrigation technologies.
The entire event was financially supported by the DFG.
