To mark the International Soil Day on December 5, 2024, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) is publishing the brochure "Soil as a Resource - Research and Sustainable Use for the Bioeconomy". It presents the joint project "Soil as a sustainable resource for the bioeconomy - BonaRes" in detail, as well as the individual research activities that are being carried out in the network from 2015 to 2025.
Under the umbrella of BonaRes, ten interdisciplinary research networks are working on research issues related to sustainable soil management in agriculture. The Leibniz Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research (ZALF) is involved in the BonaRes centre, which coordinates the research activities.
Agriculturally usable land is a limited resource. The BonaRes projects are therefore concerned with gaining a better understanding of soil functions and researching management techniques for agriculture. The aim is to promote soil health in the long term while safeguarding yields.
In the final funding phase of BonaRes, ZALF researchers are currently working on consolidating the research work in BonaRes and completing a platform for the sustainability assessment of soil use. Research data from studies are published in different ways: The BonaRes repository collects data from soil-related research and long-term field experiments. In addition, an online map of European long-term field experiments and a database of soil profiles have been established.
