In April 2022, Mariami Marsagishvili from Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and Mitiku Ayele from Hawassa University spent three weeks in Ethiopia (Southern Nations, Nationalities and People's Region (SNNPR)) to collect data together for their master theses on forest landscape restoration and collective action. The data were collected as part of the global project Forests for Future (F4F), for which the working group "Sustainable Land Use in Developing Countries" at ZALF is responsible for the accompanying research.
Net-map interviews for stakeholder analysis, a household survey and individual interviews were conducted. The joint field research was found to be very enriching by the students and also positively feedbacked by GIZ. First results will be presented virtually at a GIZ workshop on 20th of May. This work received financial support from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) commissioned and administered through the global project on forest landscape restoration and good governance in the forest sector (Forests4Future) of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ).
"Especially beneficial was the tandem research experience. We combined different perspectives and competences in terms of digitising from my side and local expertise from Mitiku's side. This made the decision-making process more efficient. To be more resourceful, we merged our household questionnaires into one, by keeping clear distinction between our research objectives. This way we not only saved the time of the interviewees but also made the field work more efficient," said Mariami Marsagishvili about the research approach.
