On November 13, 2023, Annika Hoffmann successfully completed her dissertation at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Since 2018, Ms. Hoffmann has been working as a doctoral student in the DFG-funded Research Training Group "BioMove - Integrating Biodiversity Research with Movement Ecology in Dynamic Agricultural Landscapes", investigating the effects of different environmental filters and dispersal strategies on the fungal community in the phyllosphere of wheat.
In particular, she investigated the spread of spores of the phytopathogenic fungal genera Fusarium and Alternaria and their influencing factors in wind tunnel, climate chamber and field experiments. Not only the dispersal ability of these different spore types, but also their competitive ability in the new habitat significantly determine the composition of the Fusarium population as well as that of the entire fungal community in wheat. Her conclusions for the suitability of regions for future wheat cultivation as well as the consideration of so-called priority effects should be taken into account in current and future sustainable agriculture.
We congratulate Ms. Hoffmann on this great success and wish her all the best for her future scientific career.
