At its 2022 general meeting in Trier, the German Soil Science Society awarded prizes to seven posters out of a total of 238, two of which were ZALF research posters.

Marisa Gerriets, co-worker of the FNR project "Krumensenke", received the poster prize for her research on yield effects and long-term trends of soil organic carbon (SOC) in soils that have been meliorated with "fractional deep tillage". The aim of this technique, developed in the GDR in the late 1950s, was to sustainably eliminate soil compaction at a depth of 35-45 cm - which enhances crops access to water and nutrients in subsoils. The special tillage technique is currently being further developed together with the LEMKEN company. Additionally, its suitability for a sustainable increase in SOC stocks is being tested in on-farm experiments. The research work is being carried out in the "Landscape Pedology" working group under the direction of Prof. Dr. Michael Sommer.

Lena Katharina Öttl, co-worker of the DFG project TilEro at the University of Augsburg, received the poster prize for her research on the long-term effects of soil erosion on landscape-scale carbon balance. With her simulations, she was able to prove that lateral soil redistribution over the last 1000 years - first through water erosion, then by tillage erosion - not only caused a redistribution of organic carbon in the landscape, but also led to carbon accumulation at erosional sites. She conducted her research in the ZALF landscape laboratory "AgroScapeLab Quillow". TilEro is a joint DFG project of the University of Augsburg (Prof. Dr. Peter Fiener) and ZALF (WG Landscape Pedology, Prof. Dr. Michael Sommer).
