In the course of climate change, the question of long-term yield security is becoming increasingly important for society.

For a better understanding of yield development over long periods of time and the influence of controlling factors (climate, management, soil), long-term data with large area coverage are needed. The dataset now published (https://doi.org/10.4228/zalf-mfw5-xg49) documents the annual yields and cultivated areas of four important crops (winter wheat, winter barley, silage maize, winter canola) in Germany from 1977 to 2020. For this purpose, the ZALF working group "Landscape Pedology" evaluated 122 official sources of agricultural statistics and merged them into a comprehensive dataset at county level (NUTS 3). The unique data set contains over 58,000 yield data (dt/ha) and over 22,000 data on cultivated area (ha).
