Around 130 pupils from Müncheberg Secondary School visited ZALF on 22 April and 5 May. There were three Year 7 and three Year 8 classes on each occasion. The visit took place as part of a field trip designed to help the pupils understand ZALF’s research into agriculture, biodiversity, climate change and data.
Together with the children, the Research Data Management (FDM) team, for example, explored diverse agricultural landscapes using geodata and remote sensing. The aim was to show the children what remote sensing can reveal and how it can be used in research. On the experimental plots, the pupils explored the question: ‘What grows in our fields?’. On the topic of insects, the children were able to test their knowledge in a quiz. They then searched the meadow and a pond for insects and their larvae, which the children could then examine under the microscope, along with mosquito specimens. The children were able to complete tasks at all the stations. Through this format, ZALF aims to have a greater impact in the Müncheberg area. It was a very successful event.
