On June 20th 2018, Dr. Annette Piorr and Dr. Ingo Zasada, researchers from ZALF were invited by the European Parliament (EP) to an expert hearing to talk about Urban and Peri-Urban Agriculture to the members of the Committee for Agriculture and Rural Development.
They presented a study, which has been requested by the EP in order to contribute to the ongoing policy debate. Dr. Piorr and Dr. Zasada introduced the state of the art of this particular type of agriculture, the diversity of phenomenon, the benefits for the sustainable development of urban-rural regions and the specific regulatory demands and requirements. The presentation was followed by a lively discussion with Members of the EP and the European Commission about the high relevance of Urban and Peri-urban Agriculture taking a bridging role between an urbanizing society and the agricultural sector in rural areas and the linkages to the Common Agricultural Policy and the European policy agenda more comprehensively.
