"Healthy planet – healthy people" is the motto of the global environmental report published by the UN in March. The report points on the impacts of environmental degradation for human health, which threaten to increase dramatically.

It shows that for all five core areas – the atmosphere, biodiversity, drinking water, oceans, land and soil – environmental policy is not efficient enough to prevent negative impacts on human health. This most comprehensive environmental report has been written by 250 scientists from 70 countries.  ZALF scientist Prof. Katharina Helming was a lead author for the assessment of land and soil policy. It is precisely because healthy soils are the basis for food production, water conservation and biodiversity that more efficient measures to maintain soil health across all policy sectors are particularly important.
