We strive for quantitative analyses and will test the following hypotheses&#58;<br> <ol><li>Plant species composition differs between major habitat types but shows no direct response to pesticide concentrations beyond edge effects on field margins.</li><li>Insect diversity and abundance in protected areas are negatively correlated with the share of arable fields in the landscape matrix as well as with pesticide applications in surrounding farmland. In consequence, insect diversity in regions with well-established organic farming exceeds that of regions with conventional farming. Plant and pterygote insect community compositions are correlated because of direct interactions (feeding, pollination) and similar responses to shared environmental determinants, yet pesticide application results in decoupling of communities.</li><li>Soil fauna is negatively affected by pesticide concentrations in the soil and positively correlated with the above-ground fauna as well as with vegetation diversity and abundance.
