The project is intended to produce data which enable a risk assessment of the occurrence of mosquitoborne diseases in Germany in the future. As this risk depends on several factors (e.g. occurrence of vectorcompetent mosquitoes, introduction and circulation of disease agents, behavior of the mosquitoes), the project is divided in several sub-projects which scientifically address the various aspects. Vector competence studies will be carried out which are to show whether native mosquito species and populations are able to multiply pathogens ingested during a bloodmeal and to transmit the pathogens during a following blood meal. For this purpose, in vitro and in vivo infections and transmission studies will be conducted with various frequent and widely distributed mosquito species and with Rift Valley fever and West Nile viruses. The circulation of mosquito-borne pathogens and the existence of animal reservoirs will be clarified by serological studies. Since some mosquito species can reliably neither be identified morphologically or genetically, a DNA reference bank of all mosquito species occurring in Germany will be constructed and species-specific markers will be identified. Population genetic studies and ecological studies in the field are hoped to produce scientific clues as to the expansion tendencies and behaviour of the invasive Asian tiger mosquito and the Asian bush mosquito. The present distribution of potential vector species will be mapped, and the spread as projected in the future will be modelled using climate, habitat and land structure data.
BMBF1/BLE CuliFo

2017 Landnutzung und Wirkungen

Bernhard- Nocht-Institut

Bundesforschungsinstitut für Tiergesundheit (FLI)

CvO - Carl von Ossietzky Universität Oldenburg

GFS - Gesellschaft zur Förderung der Stechmückenbekämpfung e.V.
