Francesca Calitri successfully defended her dissertation on "Co-evolution of erosion rates, weathering and profile development in soil landscapes of hummocky ground moraines" at the University of Potsdam on 22th June 2023.
She carried out her work in the international project "CORRELATE", in which the University of Zurich and Wageningen University (WUR) were involved. Francesca Calitri studied the interplay between erosion and soil development in an arable and a forested catena on two very different time scales (Holocene, last 6 decades). For this purpose she used state-of-the-art isotopic approaches (in-situ, meteoric
10Be,
239+240Pu,
14C) as well as geochemical models.
Francesca Calitri was able to show that erosion rates on arable land were an order of magnitude higher than those of the last 12,000 years.
The dissertation was jointly supervised by Prof. Dr. Michael Sommer (RA1, WG "Landscape Pedology") and Prof. Dr. Markus Egli (University of Zurich).
