Network Programme
Aims and Objectives
As a European network of excellence, Landscape Tomorrow brings together the European expertise in the field of landscape science and rural development.

Research Objectives:

  • Investigate regional specific characteristics of landscapes and sustainable land use including processes, drivers, threats, flexibility, and robustness.
  • Develop transparency and comparability of methods for analysing landscape systems and assessing the sustainability of land use. Investigate multifunctionality of landscapes with respect to spatial development.
  • Develop common databases and indicator, evaluation and monitoring systems of key landscape and land use properties.
  • Ensure integration of soil, water and biodiversity issues in land use strategies.
  • Generate an analytical framework for multifunctionality implemen-tation.
  • Develop goal-orented European land use zones as bases for sustainable management.
  • Develop tools and methods for environmental planning including the implementation of a forecasting and prevention system for catastrophic events.
  • Identify demands of the society for green or yet unaware future services. Identify land use conflicts and possible prospects of solutions and implementations.
  • Analyse the role of a knowledge-based society to develop multi-functional landscapes and land use.
  • Identify of actors, institutional settings and instruments of land use decision making.
  • Develop predicting modelling tools including scenario techniques for the identification of possible effects of alternative land develop-ment options.
  • Develop decision support tools for multi-objective land use and landscape management.

Research Integration:

  • Organise conferences, workshops and think tank event (see upcoming events).
  • Develop a library of knowledge, data bases, research facilities and scientific intrastructure.
  • Organise bridging meetings with stake-holders and policy makers (see upcoming events).

Clients
In a time period, where the pressures to change land use will increase as consequences of shifts and driving forces such as market conditions, globalisation and climate change, Landscape Tomorrow will elaborate scientific expertise concerning the economic and environmental effects of different land use options. As such, the network will be a valuable partner for organisations being involved in land use decision making, including:

  • Scientific community
  • Policy makers on EU, national and regional level
  • Societal bodies / NGOs
  • Advisory bodies
  • Land Users

Deliverables
The deliverables will include contribution to the scientific community, products for education and disseminatuon of knowledge, and information for policy making:

  • A common database of regional specific landscape and land use characteristics.
  • Tools and methods for impact assessment of land use deci-sions.
  • A monitoring system for landscape and land use changes.
  • Harmonised but regionally adapted recommendations for land use options.
  • Provision of policy relevant information at the regional, national and European scale.
