| Our Mission
Landscapes are spatial
systems in which diverse uses such as agriculture, fishery and
forestry, settlement, recreation, industry and traffic are
integrated with natural and cultural factors involving economic,
ecologic and social concerns. The history of
the multifunctional utilisation of landscapes as related to the
spatially distinct natural and cultural settings has led to an
overwhelming variety of European landscapes, each with unique
characteristics. Today, the European
perspective evokes the need for an integrated approach to the
sustainable development of these various landscape, taking into
consideration their specific characteristics.
- Identify the possible
effects of alternative land development options on landscape
sustainability and that
- support the
decision-making process on the multipurpose utilisation of
landscape resources.
These requirements call for
major scientific efforts in landscape research on a European level,
in which both interdisciplinarity and coverage of all Europe,
including the accession states, are represented.

The main task of the
proposed network, therefore, is to bring together general principles
of landscape functioning and development, identify strategies of
sustainable rural development and multipurpose land use and support
European landscape diversity and identity. |
