As laid down in the statutes, it is ZALF's mission to do scientific research on ecosystems in agricultural landscapes and to develop ecologically and economically tenable land use systems.

Methodological Approach

Investigating natural and societal processes on varying scales (spatial and temporal)

Linking outstanding research achievements in geo-, bio- and agro-sciences and in socio-economics with inter- and transdisciplinary comprehensive landscape research

Elaborating decision aids for sustainable development of landscapes under use by means of computer-aided landscape models

The scientific precondition is that the essential processes in landscape development can be identified, quantitatively described and influenced by configurating land use with a view to the problems involved. That is where current and planned research work is engaged.

Conditions and Equipment

The centre comprises institutes and several central working groups with an inter-disciplinary structure. It is equipped with a broad range of experimental facilities.
