The development of regional-scale land use systems requires an extensive knowledge of the functional interactions inherent in the soil-plant-atmosphere system, specifically with regard to matter and energy balance. The core subject of research of the institute which is presently being re-oriented, consists in elucidating, quantifying and modelling the interactions between the metabolism of the organisms and the matter and energy flows, mainly in agriculturally used landscapes. The research work directed to this subject, is concentrated in three fields of activity.

   Plant matter formation
   C/N transformations by soil organisms
   Plant-microorganisms interaction
