In addition to ZALF's overall management the Directorate bears the main responsibility for the continuous upgrading of the integrative research programme on the basis of deliberations in various bodies and working groups. The directorate coordinates research networking at National, European and International level and it supports the coordination of European research projects involving ZALF scientists. Research activities are cross cutting to those of the ZALF institutes and address the development or strategies for sustainability impact assessment of land use functions. A further purpose is to synthesise research results into a format that supports the science-policy interface and the transfer of knowledge and technology .
