Biographies of the entomologists of the world

Contents:
This database contains biographical data on 30.000 entomologists of the world, references about these entomologists, and notes on the current locations of their entomological collections. All data are presented in German. Much importance is attached to the spelling of the personal names.
Data fields:
Name: This field contains the surname and forename of each entomologist in its native spelling. Some names are marked with 'Synonym'. In such cases the biographical data are linked to a current spelling of the name. The program shows the current name automatically.
The sequence of the names and the search for these names are supported by a canonical state (all special characters of national languages are reduced, e. g. é = e, č = c etc.). Therefore do not type in special characters, e.g. type 'Muller' instead of 'Müller'. The result obtained for the query may otherwise be incomplete.
Date of birth: This field contains the complete date of birth. Incomplete data are to be found under 'Birth'. To search for dates the program requires the form 'dd.mm.yyyy' (d=day, m=month, y=year), e. g. 19.10.1871. You may replace parts of a date by the wildcard '%', e. g. '%.%.1900' will find all entomologists born in 1900.
Birth: This field contains incomplete dates of birth and additional remarks such as place of birth, etc. Some names of places are written in their native spelling. To search for such words please use the wildcards '%' or '_', e g. '%M_nchen' will find München in all combinations of words. See also under 'Death'.
Date of death: This field contains the complete date of death. Incomplete data are to be found under 'Death'. To search for dates the program requires the form 'dd.mm.yyyy' (d=day, m=month, y=year), e. g. 19.10.1871. You may replace parts of a date by the wildcard '%', e. g. '%.05.%' will find all entomologists who died in May.
Death: This field contains incomplete dates of death and additional remarks such as place of death etc. Some words are abbreviated. To search for abbeviations please use the wildcard '%' or '_', e. g. '%cal%' will find California, Calif., Cal., Calcutta, etc. See also under 'Birth'.
Interest: This field contains the insect order(s) and often subordinate taxonomic group(s) on which the entomologist mainly worked.
Remarks: Remarks complete either the name or the biography. This field can not be searched.
P. (portrait): With the symbol this field draws to your attention that an image is visible in the complete biography. To search for biographies with image select the column Portrait from the select element and enter '%' into the input field right.
Group photo: If there is a group photo in our collection, the number of the photo is shown. To order a photo, please contact Christian Kutzscher.
Acronym: This field contains acronyms of entomologist used in the literature. The data stem from Schmidt, Hübner & Gaedike (1998).
References: Contains appreciations, obituaries etc. This field can not be searched.

The origin of the data file goes back to the year 1910, when W. Horn and S. Schenkling of the DEI started to catalogue the locations of entomological collections. In the Twenties and Thirties of the last century this continually updated file became an independent core resource within the framework of international dissemination of information by the DEI. A sizable collection of portraits of ca. 3000 entomologists also belongs to this file. At present the images are published by Editha Schubert.
The author, Eckhard K. Groll, is keen to contact other people, who are engaged in biographies of entomologists and to receive corrections and supplementary information.
