Research - our motivation
- our motivation, objectives, target group
Soils are four-dimensional natural bodies being characterised by inherent, spatio-temporal heterogeneity. This is the reason why soils cannot be understood as isolated points (pedons) or areas (pedotopes), neither in their genesis nor in their current process dynamics and functionality. A comprehensive understanding requires the spatial context, the neighbourhood relations of soils in landscapes and their interactions, for example, lateral transports. Soil landscapes are important compartments of terrestrial biogeosystems and thus important components of global biogeochemical cycles. We understand by soil landscapes soil associations, evolved over long time, in the recent landscape-ecological process structure.
