The Institute of Soil Landscape Research studies structures, processes and functions of soil landscapes. By soil landscapes we understand soil associations, evolved over a long time, in the actual landscape-scale process dynamics. According to the paradigm that soils are to be understood as natural bodies, the Institute’s overarching research philosophy follows this guiding principle:

A fundamental understanding of soil processes and functionality requires cross-scale analysis of soil processes link to temporally and spatially changing structures – from the micron scale all the way to the landscape scale.
